After all, my last speakers used Altec-Lansing Voice of the Theater components in massive, corner relecting cabinets. What a pleasant surprise. The Bose units deliver very acceptable sound quality. As a bonus, the units are so small they practially disappear where I've installed them in my Library/Media room. These speakers will not compete against the very highest audiophile gear. I wasn't looking for HUGE sound, and these speakers are perfect. The quality is great (what you expect from Bose). The only downside is that there isn't a very powerful bass. It's there, but not really doing much. If your looking for enhanced sound for a tv without getting a total he theater, these speakers are great. We have an entertainment system in the basement but I wanted the ability to play music on the main floor of our house. These speakers are very small but sound great for the size. You won't mistake them for big full-range towers. 1. These require a stereo receiver / amp. 2. The speakers hook up just like regular speakers. Wires are included. 3. I use them for my home theater as well as for listening to music, and the sound coming out of them is rich, warm, clean, and loud, especially considering their small size. I'm powering them with a Sony STR-DH100 receiver which I bought for $130 on Amazon, and I believe this is a good pairing. So at that price I would give them a shot. I am using a Kenwood KFR-9080 7.1 THX Select reciever that has high power, so I believe you need decent equipment to get the most out of the system. I am really pleased with sound of this system, I have set up a Bose Lifestyle system before and it sounded ok, but not something I would ever buy. After 8 years of heavy use one of the speakers was sounding a little off. I contacted Bose just to see if I could have it repaired. They sent me a brand new speaker free of charge via fed ex. These speakers are ok, but you could easily get better ones for around $300 from klipsch. I got these, because they are small, and for bragging rights. I have them paired with a kicker solobaric l5 12 inch and a dayton 500 Watt RMS subwoofer amplifier. They are very clear, and give me some good frequency response. The large unit shown in the picture is what is called a Modulator. It gives you low end for the other 6 speakers. Almost like a sub, but not the samething at all.
